Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center

Children from the Summer Adventure Camp at the Martin Luther King Community Center visited Birds’ Eye Helicopter Tours on Wednesday August 11th for an on-ground introduction to flight. The children were able to climb aboard one of the helicopters and learned the way it works. They were also treated to a tour of Newport State Airport and watched several aircraft take off and land up close. They also saw a group of paragliders in action.

Owner/Pilot Jeff Codman personally gave the kids an on-ground tour of the business and the Robinson R-44 Raven I. Jeff took his first helicopter ride at the age of 8, began flying regularly at the age of 14, and received his private airplane license at age 17. Jeff told some stories about his experiences and also showed the children some of his aerial photography, a service he also offers.

The kids were amazed by the technology of the controls and the aerial images of Aquidneck Island that Jeff Codman has captured in flight. Keana McCants, age 9, remarked, “I could imagine how beautiful it can be up in the air seeing Aquidneck Island.” Athalia Ralph, age 10, said, “I loved the part when we got to sit in the helicopter! It was the first time I ever did!” Another child remarked that he hadn’t realized that helicopters have joysticks, just like a video game.

Camp Director Jeanine Richardson said that the experience was one of many the Center tries to provide each summer for the children who attend. “This is just one of the many great learning experiences we set up each summer. Our community is full of wonderful businesses doing interesting things”. The Center plans these kinds of activities all year long for the children enrolled in its programs.

The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center, serving Newport County, is changing lives one person at a time by offering nutritional, cultural, educational, and social services for people of all ages and cultures. These programs, offered in a safe and caring environment, provide a lasting sense of well-being, self-worth, self-fulfillment, and personal growth.
